Knowledge and experience
An Ocean Warrior was founded by marine biologist Becki Jarvis, who brings 14+ years of experience in marine and nature conservation, marine regulation and enforcement, and commercial fisheries management. She’s worked with Surfers Against Sewage, The Wildlife Trusts, and the RSPB, and has spent the last five years with the Cornish fishing industry, working across regulation, enforcement, fisheries management, fisheries science and stakeholder engagement and fisheries representation.
Becki is well known among Cornish fishing communities, especially at Mevagissey and Newlyn, where she’s built strong, lasting relationships. While working for the Marine Management Organisation, she directly supported the fishing industry before, during and post-EU-Exit, engaging fishermen and marine stakeholders during landings, drop-in sessions, workshops and presentations. Playing a key role in delivering parts of the Fisheries Act 2020, supporting industry transition through EU Exit.
Becki stays on top of fisheries policy and industry concerns by attending Fisheries Management Plan meetings and MMO workshops, All-Party Parliamentary Group on Fisheries workshops, and marine conferences. She participates in national marine and fisheries forums, and keeps up with ‘Fishing News’ and fisheries innovation. Her experience in enforcement gives her a rare, balanced perspective on how regulations affect fishermen and ocean conservation in practice. She’s trusted for her clarity, integrity, and deep understanding of UK marine law.
Throughout her work, Becki has met countless fishermen with valuable knowledge, which is too often being overlooked in decision-making. An Ocean Warrior believes this experience is a critical resource. We support management approaches that start with fishermen’s voices, not as an afterthought but as a foundation for change.
‘The fishing industry shows a clear willingness to voluntarily contribute data and experiential knowledge, but there is little evidence that current institutional frameworks for science and management are receptive and equipped to accommodate such contributions. Current approaches to producing knowledge in support of fisheries management need critical re-evaluation, including the contributions that industry can make.’ Steins et al, 2022
At An Ocean Warrior, we’re committed to improving communication between fishermen, scientists, policymakers, and the public—so that the knowledge of those who use, live and work at sea is finally given the value it deserves.
